Carola Bauckholt

Carola Bauckholt and Elizabeth Hobbs first worked together when they were paired by Klangforum Wien and Tricky Women/Tricky Realities for the project ‘The Happiness Machine’, for which they made ‘The Flounder’.  Since then they have collaborated happily on many projects for live performance and animation, the themes are broad, but they share an interest and concern for the natural world.

Coo-Cooooo-Coo? Where, where? (2024)

Coo-Cooooo-Coo? Where, where? is a performance for soprano and violin, written by composer Carola Bauckholt with animation by Elizabeth Hobbs.

The piece was inspired by Doggerland, a vast ‘Garden of Eden’ that once connected the east coast of England with the European mainland, until it disappeared under a rising sea around 5000 BC. Music and animation tell of the sounds and the movement of the creatures who lived in Doggerland, and reflects upon the struggle for survival of individuals, the collective and, ultimately, the ecosystem upon which we depend. The piece was created for Juliet Fraser and Hannah Weirich.  Premiered at Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik, 27 September 2024, by Juliet Fraser (soprano) and Hannah Weirich (violin). Sound mixed by Thomas Wegner.

UTFLUKT (2022)

The Flounder (2019)

The Flounder is an experimental interpretation of the short story 'A Fisherman and his Wife’ by the Brothers Grimm.  This 18th century German tale is a beautifully structured moral narrative about greed, in which a person is driven to acquire more and more wealth at the expense of the environment.  Carola Bauckholt and Elizabeth Hobbs were paired and commissioned by Klangforum Wien and Tricky Women/Tricky Realities for the project ‘The Happiness Machine’ with ten other female animators and composer pairings.  All ten films were originally presented and performed with a live orchestra in 2018.  A single screen version of the film was also mixed for festivals and online.
